Largest Feathered Dinosaur Fossils Found

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com - Xu Xing, researcher of the Institute of Vertebrate Palaentology and Palaeoanthropology in Beijing, China, discovered a new species of dinosaur has been named as a furry animal with the largest size.

The new species is described from three specimens of fossils found in Liaoning Province, northeast China. One specimen is an adult individual, while the other two were young.

The biggest dinosaurs found Huali Yutyrannus named, was taken from Latin and Mandarin, which means the king is great and charming.

Scientists estimate that the dinosaur lived about 125 million years ago. The size of this dinosaur density as adults can reach 1.4 tons.

"Fur Yutyrannus as simple filaments. Fur is more like a modern chick feathers than adult feathers are stiff," said Xing as reported by AFP on Thursday (04/05/2012).

This discovery proves the existence of feathered dinosaurs. Scientists argue, could serve as a dinosaur feathers insulation, attract mates, and show valor during a fight.

Yutyrannus Huali Tyranosaurus rex is still a relative who lived to 65 million years ago, when a giant asteroid hits the Earth and wipe out an estimated majority of living beings.

The difference, if the T-rex had two fingers functional, Yutyrannus hulai has three functional fingers. In addition, this new species have distinctive legs, in contrast to other relatives of T. rex.

Although hairy, Yutyrannus Huali too hairy to be able to fly. However, scientists still believe that modern birds evolved from dinosaurs is perched like a tree and finally learn to fly.

In addition to fur, this new dinosaur species also have sharp teeth. This dinosaur leg shorter than the hind legs so that the movement is supported by the feet of dinosaurs over the back.

The discovery of this dinosaur published in the journal Nature.
